Chiapas is central for all the coffee producers of Mexico and Central America, and for the numerous honey producers in the Yucatán peninsula and Chiapas. For people of other regions, it is logistically and economically affordable to arrive at Tuxtla Gutiérrez airport (TGZ), an hour’s drive from San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

San Cristóbal is a pleasant city for tourists, offering a plenty of accommodation, at a variety of price ranges. The weakness of the Mexican peso makes it very cheap for people of other countries to stay at hotels (e.g. 25 USD a night for a room in a fairly good hotel). FTIS organizers will be looking into the possibility of finding accommodation to small farmer groups in teaching facilities of local NGOs.

Visitors from Central and South America will need a visa to enter Mexico. It is important to verify conditions with Mexican authorities in charge of migration, and to apply for a visa well in advance.
