Resumen: "On January 7 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed the downlisting of the West Indian Manatee based partly on our Population Viability Analysis (Castelblanco-Martínez et al 2012). As authors, we just released in Sirenews our opinion on the misuse of this work to support such decision. Also, we expressed our position on the WI manatee downlisting. As biologists and manatee specialists in developing countries, we are very concerned that the decision to downlist the West Indian manatee in the US could affect the conservation status of the species in other countries. To our knowledge, there is not one reported case of local threats on Antillean manatees being properly and completely addressed in the Latin American region."
