Resumen: "This chapter analyzes power relations involved in environmental governance in the Selva El Ocote Biosphere Reserve (REBISO) in Chiapas, Mexico. In order to identify elements that shape power relations, the study aims to examine the perceptions of local actors while observing the role of the operators of the entity responsible for administering REBISO. We used a transdisciplinary framework including the concept of perception as a “bridging concept” among various fields of knowledge. Also, we used qualitative research methods including the case study approach as well as interviews and focus groups in four communities that inhabit the buffer zone of REBISO. Finally, in order to strengthen the practice of governance and consider the dimensions of social and environmental sustainability in an integral manner, the study points to the need for establishing an intercultural approach to operation of the environmental regime of the REBISO and of protected natural areas in general."
