Objetivo del curso:   

Las decisiones productivas y reproductivas del ser humano forman parte de las estrategias adaptativas que
regulan sus interacciones con el ambiente. Las opciones que tomen serán mediadas por su historia de vida y su posición social y definirán el impacto que tendrán en el ecosistema, en su bienestar individual y en las probabilidades de subsistencia de la estrategia como sistema. En el curso, el estudiante aprenderá a identificar estas estrategias, comprender su funcionamiento y evaluarlas en términos de su adaptabilidad, vulnerabilidad y sustentabilidad.

Course Description:

Human productive and reproductive choices are taken within adaptive systems that regulate human environment interactions.  These choices will determine our impact on the environment, our individual well being and the survival probabilities of the system itself.  The Human Ecology course will teach students how to identify these strategies and will provide them with the necessary tools to make adaptive inferences on local survival systems that must respond to globalized demands.  The course draws heavily on the teachers’ own research with agricultural populations in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Course Description:

The course will teach students how to approach development and human-environment interactions from an ecological perspective. It critically  reviews the materialist perspective on development which assumes that the market or a better distribution of wealth are capable of supporting growth indefinitely, and that have dominated development policies world wide since the end of World War II.  The student will acquire theoretical and methodological tools necessary to evaluate, from an ecosystem perspective, the impact that over 60 years of materialist development policies have had on: local subsistence adaptive systems, on third world population’s rural and urban well being and on today’s global wealth and resource distribution. Specific development agendas and strategies, such as the exportation of green revolution technology will be reviewed and development impacts will be analyzed using case studies with emphasis in southern Mexican agricultural societies where the professor does research.
